The Jewish community in Shanghai came to a standstill on Wednesday as people from various local consulates, international communities and Chinese society attended a Holocaust ceremony at Ohel Rachel Synagogue in Jing'an district.

The ritual, organized by the Consulate General of Israel in Shanghai, has been running for decades within the Jewish community in Shanghai as an annual commemoration of Israel's Holocaust Memorial Day for those who were systematically killed by Nazi Germany during World War II.

The ritual commemorated Jewish victims and paid tribute to people who risked their lives to save Jews. Attendees revisited their lifetime stories and lit a candle for their braveness.

Among those honored were Dimitar Peshev from Bulgaria, Jose Maria Barreto from Peru, Nguyen Cong Anh from Vietnam, people who helped Danish Jews and Bodson Victor from Luxembourg.
